Lady Blazers start 2021-22 season with pair of wins at Moberly Area Classic
MOBERLY, Mo. – The Vincennes University Lady Trailblazers began their 2021-22 campaign over the weekend and finished with a pair of wins over William Penn JV and John Wood Community College. VU began the season Friday by taking on William Penn JV. The Trailblazers got off to a slow start, only managing a two-point lead after the first quarter. Vincennes began to pick up speed offensively in the second quarter, when the Blazers used a 12-0 scoring run to expand the lead and take a 32-21 advantage into the locker room.

VU began the season Friday by taking on William Penn JV. The Trailblazers got off to a slow start, only managing a two-point lead after the first quarter.
Vincennes began to pick up speed offensively in the second quarter, when the Blazers used a 12-0 scoring run to expand the lead and take a 32-21 advantage into the locker room.
The VU offense completely caught up in the second half, outscoring William Penn JV 57-29 in the final 20 minutes of play, including scoring 30 points in the third quarter.
Vincennes rode this third quarter to a commanding 89-50 victory in the first game of the season.
Sophomore center Macy Michels (Teutopolis, Ill.) tipped-off the season in a big way, in her first game back since suffering an injury last season ended her year after three game. Michels recorded a double-double with 12 points and a team-high 13 rebounds.
Vincennes was led offensively by Candela Lascorz (Huesca, Spain), who came off the bench to finish with 16 points on a perfect seven for seven shooting from the field. Lascorz also grabbed seven rebounds for the Blazers.
Sophomore Laila Grant (Derwood, Md.) ended her night with 11 points, five rebounds and five assists in her VU debut.
Freshman guards Chanice Willis (Champaign, Ill.) and Cherrelle Newsom (Indianapolis, Ind.) round out the Vincennes scorers to reach double-figures, with the duo scoring 10 points each, with Newsom leading the Lady Blazers with seven assists.
The Lady Blazers finished out their opening weekend Saturday by facing-off against John Wood Community College.
VU's offense picked up right where it left off Friday as Cherrelle Newsom got the Blazers scoring started early, scoring nine points in the opening quarter as Vincennes ended the first 10 minutes of play with a 28-11 lead.
Newsom's offensive explosion continued throughout the first half, as the freshman guard finished with 17 points at the break and Vincennes continued to build a 21-point halftime lead.
The second half proved to be more of a defensive battle, as the two teams stayed even in the third quarter.
Vincennes put the finishing touches on their second win of the weekend by holding John Wood to only five points in the final quarter of play as VU captured the 74-43 win.
Newsom led the Trailblazers in scoring, finishing with 22 points on the game, including hitting a team-high four three-pointers.
Macy Michels finished with 15 points and six rebounds, while Laila Grant just missed a double-double with 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Freshman Kylee Shelton (Bloomfield, Ind.) came off the bench to see her first action in a collegiate game to finish with 10 points and four assists, including hitting three three-pointers.
The Lady Trailblazers will hit the home floor for the first time this season Tuesday, Nov. 9 when Vincennes hosts Jefferson College from Hillsboro, Mo. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. eastern.
