VU Finishes 21st at Columbia 300 Western Shootout
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Vincennes University Men's Bowling team wrapped up its third consecutive weekend of competition with a determined showing at the Columbia 300 Western Shootout, held Oct. 11–12 at Royal Pin Western in Indianapolis. Battling fatigue and a challenging lane environment, the Trailblazers' varsity squad finished 21st overall in a 29-team field, while those competing in the JV division earned a strong ninth-place showing among 13 teams.
Saturday — Traditional Play
VU opened the event with six traditional team games on Saturday, totaling 5,772 pins for a 192 team average, placing 20th after the opening day. The Trailblazers' best game came early with a 1,066 start, followed by scores of 875, 1,054, 940, 894, and 943.
Cadyn Coddington led the way on Saturday with an impressive 1,241 series (206.8 average), highlighted by games of 244, 214, and 202. Nick Gregg followed closely with a 1,202 series (200.3 average) and a 256 high game, while Dakota Waskom added a 799 four-game total (199.8 average) with a 223 high. Dylan Lewis finished with a 778 total, rolling games of 269, 163, 194, and 153, and Eli Fromm posted a 562 series with a 212 high. Colton Martin added a 531 series, while Ryan Webber contributed 350 pins and Nick Hubbard added 308 in limited games.
Head Coach Paul LeMond said the team's first day was marked by adjustments and resilience as the group continued to recover from recent lineup disruptions. "We didn't start the way we wanted, but it wasn't a bad day either," LeMond said. "A few guys bowled really well, but we just couldn't quite get everyone in sync. It's been a long stretch on the road, and the guys are still finding their rhythm, but they kept battling."
Sunday — Baker Play
The Trailblazers carried that fight into Sunday's 16 Baker games, closing out the weekend with a total pinfall of 8,958 to finish 21st overall. After averaging 187 through the first six games, VU rebounded to average 206 over the final 11, highlighted by games of 232, 221, 215, 222, 220, and 210.
LeMond credited the team's persistence through transitions and lineup shifts. "We were trying to get the right people in the right places and make the right ball changes," he said. "It seemed like every time we made a move, the lanes would transition again. But over the last 11 games, we started to fill frames and execute better. The guys kept fighting, and we finished the weekend a lot stronger."
JV Division
Due to the depth of this year's varsity roster, several Trailblazers competed in the JV division and contributed strong performances that added to the team's overall success. The group placed ninth out of 13 teams with a 5,579 total pinfall. Carter Martin led the squad with an impressive 1,259 series (209.8 average), rolling games of 221, 213, 222, and 207. Tad Harvey also shined with a 1,116 series, while Vincent Murrey added a 1,122 total behind a 258 high game.
LeMond said the development of the younger bowlers has been encouraging early in the season. "Our young group continues to show progress each week," he said. "Carter Martin bowled extremely well and finished among the top 40 individuals in the entire event. We're seeing more consistency and confidence from that group every time they compete."
Looking Ahead
LeMond said the team's focus now shifts to recovery and preparation after three consecutive weekends of competition. "We've been on the lanes a lot early in the season," LeMond said. "The guys are tired, but we'll get a few days off, reset, and be ready to go again. Once we're rested and back at full strength, we'll be right where we need to be."
The Trailblazers will return to action October 25–26 at Super Bowl Lanes in Canton, Michigan, competing in the AHBA I and II Tournaments.
