Trailblazer baseball picks up three wins Saturday, two in walk-off fashion

VINCENNES, Ind. – The Vincennes University baseball was very busy over the weekend, coming away with four wins in two days, including three wins on Saturday alone.

The Trailblazers got the day started off early as VU finished their game with Joliet that was suspended in the third inning Friday night.

Vincennes held a 7-3 lead at the time of the suspension, but Joliet was set up with the bases loaded.

Joliet would plate three more runs in the top of the third when the game resumed, giving VU a narrow 7-6 lead.

The Trailblazers would get a run in the bottom of the fifth, but Joliet would even the score in the top of the seventh to force extra innings.

VU would get the walk-off victory in the ninth to claim a 9-8 victory.

Bailey Elliot came in in relief of Cooper Thacker who had pitched the previous day. Elliott would pitch 3.1 innings, giving up three hits and one run while striking out six.

Elliott was relieved by Parker Watts who threw 3 innings to get the win, giving up two hits and no runs, with four strike outs of his own.

VU and Joliet then faced off Saturday afternoon for the final of their three-game weekend set.

The Trailblazers again got off to a hot start, jumping out to a 5-0 lead after two innings.

Joliet would respond to even the score in the fifth, before VU answered with a run of their own.

Cody Swimm entered the game in relief of starter Sam Steimel to get the save and give VU their second win of the day by the score of 6-5.

Steimel was the winning pitcher, throwing 5 innings, giving up six hits, five runs and striking out seven.

Swimm would pitch the final two innings to earn the save, giving up no hits and no runs, while striking out three.

The final game of the day saw the Trailblazers take on the College of DuPage.

This time VU fell behind early, facing a 3-0 deficit in the third inning.

Vincennes would respond to score three in the sixth, to even the score and force extra innings.

The Trailblazers would come away with their third win of the day and second walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth at VU claimed the 4-3 victory.

Braedon Nichols started the game for VU on the mound and threw 3 innings of four hit baseball, giving up three runs and striking out two.

Luke Osborn pitched in relief, giving up no hits and no runs while striking out seven in 4 innings out of the pen.

Blade Pittman came away as the winning pitcher in 2 innings of relief, giving up no hits and no runs while striking out three.

Vincennes' second game with College of DuPage scheduled for Sunday was rained out.

VU improves to 5-1 on the season as they prepare to host D-I No. 1-ranked Wabash Valley Wednesday, March 3 at Jerry Blemker Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2:45 p.m. eastern.
