Vincennes University baseball split opening day doubleheader at Cleveland State

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The Vincennes University baseball (1-1) team opened their 2021 spring schedule with a split doubleheader with Cleveland State CC (7-5) in Cleveland, Tennessee.
Game 1
The VU offense for the most part was shut down by Cleveland State starting pitcher Bryce Jenkins, who threw six scoreless innings. Vincennes only had three hits and were led by freshman SS Peyton Lane who was 2-3 and RS freshman RF Isaac Lane who had the Trailblazer's other hit.
VU starting pitcher, sophomore RHP Sam Steimel (0-1) took the loss and pitched 2.2 innings allowing four runs on six hits and struck out four.

Freshman RHP Copper Thacker came on in relief and threw 2.1 innings allowing two runs on two hits and struck out four.

Redshirt freshman Bailey Elliott came on in relief and throwing one inning allowing one run on one hit and had one strike out.

Game 2
The Trailblazer offense came to life in the sixth and seventh innings of game two putting up five runs in top of the 6th and the go ahead run in the top of the seventh.
RF Isaac Lane (0-2, 2 BB, run scored) lead off the top of the sxth with a walk.  1B Macaine Claycomb (2-3, BB) singled placing runners at first and third.  LF Devon Rodgers (1-4, RBI, run scored) had an RBI fielders choice that scored Lane.  

Sam Steimel got a pinch hit walk, placing runners first and second.  RF Nolan Clark's ground ball error by Cleveland State SS allowed Rogers to score and moved Steimel to third.

LF Colin Long (2-4, 2B, RBI, Run scored) hit a double to score Steimel. SS Peyton Lane (1-4, 2B) hit a ground ball resulting in a throwing error on the SS allowed Clark to score and an RBI single by Trent Weiss allowed Long to score.  

Vincennes went ahead 5-4 in the middle of the sixth inning.  Cleveland State tied it at 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth.
In the top of the seventh Macaine Claycomb lead off with a single followed by LF Devon Rodgers who singled placing runners at first and second.  

Sam Steimel hit into a fielder's choice that got pinch runner Gage Manuel thrown out at third.  A wild pitch allowed Rodgers and Steimel to move up to second and third and another wild pitch allowed Rodgers to score what would be the winning run.
On the mound Parker Watts (1-0) picked up the team's first win of the year pitching in relief.  He threw two inning allowing no runs on one hit and struck out four.  

Second year freshman Gerhrig Tenhumberg started the game and threw three innings, allowing two runs on three hits and struck out five.

Second year freshman Cody Swimm pitched well throwing 1.1 innings in relief and allowing no runs and no hits.

The Trailblazers will be in action for their home opener as the VU hosts Ancilla, Friday Feb. 19. First pitch at 2:45 p.m. eastern. The opening weekend will continue on Saturday at VU will take on Ancilla at 11 a.m. eastern, followed by South Suburban at 4 p.m. The Trailblazers will then take on South Suburban again Sunday, Feb. 21. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. eastern.
