Matt Jordan wins Hoosier Heartland D3 Challenge at Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ind – Trailblazer sophomore Matt Jordan picked up the three-round tournament win over the weekend at Otter Creek Golf Club in Columbus by shooting a combined one under, 215.

Vincennes as a team finished eighth out of 11 teams competing. Vincennes was the only two-year school at the tournament filled with four-year teams.

"We had an outstanding performance in Matt Jordan, winning the tournament in a field of 68 players," VU Golf coach Dennis Chattin said. "Not only did he win, he won by six shots with a three-round total of one under par in some really tough conditions on a really good golf course. Otter Creek has hosted the Indiana State Open and is known for its quality and difficulty."

Jordan got the started on a high-note, shooting a tournament-best three under 69 in the opening round Saturday.

"I can't say enough about Matt's play in some really tough, windy and rainy conditions," Chattin added. "He had his low round as a collegiate player with his three under par 69 first round."

Bryce Kirchner followed Jordan's opening round with a 79, followed by an 83 from Jackson Roberts, 85 from Brock Craney and 86 from Cole Parmer.

The second round Saturday saw all the Trailblazer scores increase, as Jordan shot a 74, Kirchner 80, Craney, 87, Parmer 89 and Roberts 102.

Vincennes returned to the links Sunday morning for the third and final round of the tournament and the new day say many of VU's scores improve over the second round.

Matt Jordan finished the tournament with an even par 72, followed by Craney's 79, Kirchner 81, Parmer 84 and Roberts 92, giving the Trailblazers a combined team tournament score of 962.

The Trailblazers as a team finished eighth out of 11 schools in the tournament, with all 10 other schools competing being four-year programs.

"We were competing against all four-year schools and Transylvania and Denison are know for their good golf programs so for Jordan to win and win with an under-par performance is quite an accomplishment following up a good performance with his fifth-place finish at the Keene Trace Golf Course last tournament," Chattin said. He is really starting to mature as a player and displayed patience on the golf course after sleeping on a lead after the first two rounds."

"We were disappointed with the eighth of 11 teams finish, but we had one bad round in the second round, which kept us out of the top half of the field."

The Trailblazer golf team now has two weeks to prepare for the VU Invitational, starting Saturday, April 24 and continuing Sunday April 25 at Country Oaks Golf Club in Montgomery, Ind.

This will serve as the Trailblazers' final regular season tournament as they will begin their Conference Tournament Monday April 26 at the Champaign Country Club in Champaign, Ill.
