Robinson, Ill. – The 2020 Lincoln Trail Fall Invitational at Quail Creek Country Club in Robinson went off with out a hitch as the Trailblazers posted a third-place finish as a team out of six competing and VU's own Matt Jordan brought home a third-place medal as an individual.
The 36-hole, one-day event began early Saturday morning and continued well into the evening, causing the competitors to not only have to battle the course, but the on set of mental and physical fatigue throughout the day.
"Naturally, I was happy that Matt (Jordan) was able to be a top-five finisher again," Vincennes golf coach Dennis Chattin said. "He has consistently been first, second or third in tournaments. Fortunately, he finished the day with a birdie and an eagle, which helped his cause tremendously."
At the end of the first 18-hole round Vincennes was more toward the bottom of the scorecard, entering the second round of the day in fifth place.
VU picked up some steam in the second round of the day as Matt Jordan, Brock Craney and Cole Parmer all improved their scores from the morning.
"Today's tournament was a war of attrition," Chattin said. "Golf is a mentally tough game, especially when you play these types of courses, with the kinds of greens we saw today. Golf is so unique in that it's never the same. I think mentally this course wore everyone down and maybe it affected some teams more than us."
Vincennes would finish the day in a tie for third place with Danville Area Community College with a team score of 659.
"Overall we were really kind of disappointed, I thought some of our other guys would score better than they did, but you're playing a different kind of golf course, this course hosted a PGA tournament in the 70's and it will test you, particularly when playing 36 holes," Chattin added about his team's performance.
Up next the VU will take part in an Invitational exhibition at Oak Meadow Country Club in Evansville Monday, October 12th.
"We've got a good supporter of Vincennes University that invited us down to play a great golf course Monday. Every good experience on a good golf course prepares you for Regional," Chattin added about the opportunity to play with some bigger schools in Evansville.
The exhibition will include the golf teams from Vincennes as well as the University of Evansville and the University of Southern Indiana.
"My philosophy has always been, play with good people, play good competition and play good golf courses. Then when we get ready to play Regionals, it's been a formula that has worked for us over the years."
