VU Baseball pitcher Gehrig Tenhumberg signs to play at Oakland City

VINCENNES, Ind. – One of the Trailblazers' top pitchers from last season Gehrig Tenhumberg recently signed to continue his athletic and academic careers at Oakland City University next season.

Tenhumberg served as VU's series opening starter for most of the 2021 spring baseball season and was a strong anchor to a solid Trailblazer pitching rotation.

"Vincennes University gave me that smaller school feel that I was looking for," Tenhumberg said. "VU also offers smaller classroom sizes, which allowed me to get more one-on-one help from my professors."

"Athletically, Vincennes offers multiple weight rooms, the Aquatic Center, Beless Gym and the best baseball field in junior college baseball," Tenhumberg added. "VU checked all my boxes and gave me the opportunity to improve as a baseball player."

The six-foot-six right-hander finished the 2021 season with four wins, including two complete games, with a 3.90 earned run average and 74 strikeouts. Tenhumberg averaged just over eight punchouts per nine innings this past season.

Tenhumberg recorded two shutouts on the mound this past season, first coming in March against Milwaukee Area Tech and later at Spoon River in the final series of the regular season.

"I went into college not knowing what degree I wanted to work towards, but Vincennes offers a wide-range of majors to choose from, which helped me start my journey towards an Associate's degree in Graphic Design."

"The Vincennes athletic facilities helped me to get stronger, which was my main goal," Tenhumberg said. "The combination of Vincennes University's coaching staff and athletic facilities assisted me with taking my game to a new level."

Tenhumberg will be joining an OCU program led by second-year head coach Andy Lasher who guided the Mighty Oaks to a 17-27 record last season.

Oakland City recently returned to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) ranks after leaving the NCAA in July of 2020.

OCU is a member of the River States Conference, which is made up of schools from Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

"Oakland City gave me an offer that I could not turn down," Tenhumberg said. "Plus, they have a new, young head coach that shares the same goals as me. I am looking forward to building a new culture at Oakland City University."
