Steimel’s complete game leads Blazers to road split with John Wood

QUINCY, Ill. – The Vincennes University Trailblazer baseball team got back in the win column Sunday afternoon after picking up a two-game split at conference opponent John Wood.

The first game of the day saw John Wood get on the board early on their home field, scoring in the bottom of the first, before VU answered back with three runs in the second.

The Trailblazers added a fourth run in the fourth inning before John Wood responded with a run of their own in the fourth and two runs in the fifth.

The scheduled seven-inning game went in to extras, where VU struck first in the eighth, taking a 5-4 lead.

John Wood rallied back in the bottom half of the inning to pick up the walk-off win 6-5.

Connor VanLannen got the start on the mound for VU and threw five innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and striking out four.

Luke Osborn pitched in relief and surrendered one run on two hits, while picking up two strikeouts.

Parker Watts came in in relief in the eighth, giving up one run on one hit for the Blazers.

Vincennes bounced back in game two of the day, striking first with a pair of runs in the second, before John Wood evened the score with runs in the second and third innings.

The Trailblazers took the lead back in the fifth and grew a 5-2 advantage after a three-run inning and VU didn't stop there, picking up four more runs in the sixth.

Vincennes shut the door in the seventh to pick up the 9-2 victory.

Sam Steimel started on the mound for VU in game 2 and pitched a complete, seven-inning, game, giving up two runs on four hits and striking out seven.

At the plate VU had a big day from sophomore third baseman Max Flock who went two for four with a home run and four RBI's. Flock also had a homerun, a tripe and two RBI's in game one.

Freshman right fielder Isaac Lane went two for four in game two, with a pair of doubles, an RBI and scored twice.

The MWAC baseball season rolls along this weekend as the Trailblazers host No. 15 Parkland College Friday April 30 at Jerry Blemker Field. First pitch Friday is set for 2 p.m. eastern.

The four-game weekend series then shifts to Champaign Sunday, May 2 for the final two games. First pitch Sunday is also set for 2 p.m. eastern.
