Trailblazer baseball falls in conference doubleheader at Danville Area

DANVILLE, Ill. – In the final two games of their four-game conference series with the Jaguars of Danville Area, the Vincennes University baseball team fell by the scores of 8-0 and 12-4 Monday afternoon.

Danville opened game one scoring early, picking up one run in the second and three more in the third to take a 4-0 lead into the fifth.

The Jaguars would continue to build on their lead, scoring three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth on their way to a game one 8-0 win.

The Trailblazer offense went cold in game one at Danville, with Macaine Claycomb and Connor VanLannen being the only VU batters to record hits.

Sam Steimel was saddled with the loss for VU after throwing four and two-third innings, giving up seven runs on nine hits and recording five strikeouts.

Cody Swimm came in in relief to throw the final inning and a third, giving up one run on one hit on the afternoon.

The VU offense finally woke up in game two, pushing across a run in the top of the first, before Danville Area answered with a run in the first as well.

The Jaguars took the lead with a run in the third, which was quickly answered with a VU run in the fourth.

Danville took firm control of the game with three runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to take a 9-3 lead in the seventh.

Vincennes would get a run back in the seventh, but Danville tacked on three more insurance runs in the eighth as Danville game away with the Monday sweep 12-4.

Braedon Nichols got the start on the mound for VU and threw four solid innings, giving up five runs on seven hits and punching out five.

Connor VanLannen pitched in relief, pitching an inning and two-thirds, giving up four runs on three hits, with four strikeouts.

Parker Watts threw two innings of relief, giving up two runs on three hits and recorded four strikeouts.

The Mid-West Athletic Conference baseball season rolls along this Thursday as Vincennes hosts Lincoln Land College at Jerry Blemker Field April 1. First pitch Thursday is scheduled for 2 p.m. eastern.

The series will then shift to Springfield, Ill. for the final two games of the four-game set Saturday, April 3. First pitch Saturday is scheduled for 2 p.m. eastern.
